First Student is hiring immediately for a skilled Diesel Mechanic to join our team servicing the Guilford County School District. In this role, you'll help maintain and repair our fleet of school buses-ensuring safe, reliable transportation for students in your community.

Competitive hourly pay: $28-$31/hour (based on experience and certifications)
Additional $0.25/hour for each relevant ASE certification (we pay for the training and exams)

As a Diesel Mechanic with First Student, your responsibilities will include:
Conducting preventative maintenance and repairs on diesel school buses
Diagnosing and repairing brake systems, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, and other major components
Performing routine service tasks: replacing lights, fuses, wiper blades, filters, belts, batteries, and fluids
Completing and maintaining accurate work orders, maintenance records, and parts usage logs
Performing emergency mobile repairs as needed
Leading inspections, safety checks, and annual maintenance processes
Using diagnostic tools, including manufacturer software, to identify and resolve issues
Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized shop environment
Supporting shop safety by identifying and reporting equipment issues
At least 5 years of experience with diesel, automotive, electric, or CNG vehicles (or equivalent training/education)
Valid driver's license
Willingness to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire (training provided)
ASE Brake Certification required within first 6 months (we cover costs)
Adequate personal toolset
Preferred:
ASE certifications (additional pay available per certification)
Advanced mechanical and diagnostic skills
Familiarity with DOT safety regulations
Computer literacy for diagnostics and maintenance records
Strong communication and teamwork abilities
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Shop environment with exposure to dust, grease, and outdoor weather
Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and work in physically demanding positions (crouching, under vehicles, etc.)
Compliance with all DOT drug testing requirements (including restrictions on Schedule I substances such as marijuana)
