Now Hiring: Diesel Mechanic
Location: First Student - Anniston City Schools, AL
Schedule: Full-Time | Monday-Friday
Starting Pay: $25.00/hour (based on experience and qualifications)

First Student is seeking an experienced Diesel Mechanic to join our maintenance team in Anniston, Alabama. In this role, you'll help ensure the safety and reliability of our school bus fleet serving the Anniston City School District.

Note: This is a diesel-specific position. Applicants must have prior diesel mechanic experience and be 21 years of age or older due to CDL requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on diesel-powered school buses

  • Diagnose and service brake systems, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, and electrical components

  • Complete work orders accurately and in a timely manner

  • Provide mobile/emergency repair support when needed

  • Ensure all work complies with DOT and safety regulations

Required Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred

  • Technical or vocational certification in vehicle repair (preferred)

  • Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, or willingness to obtain within 3 months (training and costs covered)

  • ASE certification preferred; must be willing to participate in ASE testing program (minimum 6 ASE certifications within 6 months)

  • State inspection license (if applicable)

Experience & Skills

  • 5+ years of diesel or automotive repair experience preferred (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic skills

  • Familiarity with DOT regulations and safety standards

  • Valid driver's license

  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Must maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment

  • Must have and maintain an adequate set of personal mechanic tools

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Shop environment with exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and all weather conditions

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds

  • Ability to work in crouched or prone positions underneath vehicles
