At First Student, safety is at the heart of everything we do. As North America's leading school bus company, we're looking for a Location Safety Manager to champion safety at the local level, support our drivers and trainers, and ensure our students and communities are protected every day.
Major Responsibilities
Driver Hiring & Compliance
Administer and oversee the hiring and compliance process, including interviews, DOT physicals, motor vehicle records, fingerprint checks, background investigations, drug/alcohol testing, and completion of government forms.
Maintain compliance with all federal, state/provincial, local, and company safety policies and documentation requirements.
Training & Development
Provide direction, guidance, and oversight to location trainers, including monitoring training hours.
Manage execution of location training programs to ensure compliance and consistency.
Schedule and conduct recertification and enhancement training as required.
Revise training materials based on company updates and branding requirements.
Lead engaging monthly safety meetings and deliver training sessions to drivers and attendants.
Accident & Incident Investigation
Lead safety event investigations using the 5-Why's or similar methodology.
Complete collision reports, oversee collision files, and enter findings into DMO and collision registers.
Coordinate with claims offices and adjusters, provide post-event counseling, and facilitate the driver appeal process.
Participate in Safety Committee meetings and lead safety event review meetings to determine preventability and corrective measures.
Driver Performance Monitoring
Oversee driver performance through road evaluations, telematics, and other technology tools in collaboration with the Location Manager.
Anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions or practices, and implement hazard control programs.
Safety Planning & Reporting
Analyze safety data and trends to prepare actionable safety plans.
Administer and monitor safety performance improvement plans.
Prepare various safety reports for review by leadership.
Manage safety and training program costs in line with budgetary requirements and recommend cost-saving strategies
Leadership & Culture
Provide visible safety leadership and operational support by actively participating in BeSafe principles, touchpoints, debrief sessions, tours, toolbox talks, and safety conversations.
Promote and sustain an inclusive and positive work environment.
Minimum Education & Certifications
Three (3) years of safety, compliance, or transportation experience OR a combination of relevant degree and equivalent years of experience.
Relevant safety certifications and OSHA 10-hour training preferred.
Minimum Experience & Skills
Solid knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, FTA, and state/provincial safety regulations.
Experience leading investigations and implementing corrective safety measures.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); familiarity with payroll/timekeeping systems and safety technology (Smart technology, apps, encrypted drives, shared drives).
Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels, customers, union officials, and the public.
Strong leadership, interpersonal, and training skills.
Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and develop creative safety solutions.
Fluent in English.
Demonstrated reliability, consistent attendance, and punctuality.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Ability to move about office, vehicles, and facility areas (e.g., bus lot).
Ability to use standard office equipment and filing systems.
Must hold a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation to conduct accident investigations, driver evaluations, and related duties.
