Job Summary:
As a Technician III with First Student, you will perform advanced diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on school buses in alignment with safety and reliability standards. You will work with minimal supervision, independently resolve complex issues, and may mentor Technicians I and II. This role may include acting as Shift Foreman and eligibility for shift premium.

We are seeking technicians with at least 3 years of hands-on mechanical experience - preferably involving diesel engines or large fleet vehicles such as buses, trucks, or heavy-duty equipment. Experienced automotive technicians who want to advance their diesel skills are encouraged to apply.

Pay: $34.00/hr

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform basic to advanced repairs with minimal guidance
    (bulbs, fuses, wipers, belts, hoses, batteries, fluids, lubrication)

  • Diagnose and repair:

    • Diesel engines and aftertreatment systems (preferred)

    • Air/hydraulic brake systems - including inspections and adjustments

    • Suspensions, drivetrain components, and clutches

  • Use manufacturer diagnostic tools for troubleshooting

  • Conduct preventative maintenance and safety inspections per schedule

  • Maintain accurate documentation of repairs, labor, and parts

  • Safely maintain and operate shop tools and equipment

  • Remove, overhaul, and reinstall major bus components

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior technicians when needed

  • Respond to road calls and provide emergency support as required

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment

  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • High school diploma or GED (preferred)

  • Vocational/technical training in diesel or automotive (preferred)

  • CDL Class B with Passenger Endorsement
    (required within 3 months of hire - training/support provided)

  • State inspection license (if applicable)

  • ASE certifications preferred
    Must be enrolled in ASE testing with 6 certifications expected within 6 months

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of professional mechanical experience

  • Diesel engine and heavy-duty repair experience strongly preferred
    (School bus and/or transit bus experience is a plus)

  • Familiarity with DOT/commercial vehicle standards a plus

  • Ability to work independently with strong problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities

  • Must provide and maintain necessary personal tools

  • Dependable attendance and time management required

Physical Requirements

  • Shop environment with exposure to grease, dust, and weather

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Must work beneath vehicles and in confined spaces
